From San José (and Limón) by car...
Take the Guápiles Highway north out of San José on Calle 3 before turning east and passing close to Barva Volcano and through the rainforests of Braulio Carrillo National Park en route to Limón. The drive takes about 2 1/2 hours and is spectacularly beautiful, especially when it's not raining or misty. OR take the old highway, heading east out of San José on Avenida Central and pass through San Pedro before reaching Cartago. From Cartago on, the road is narrow and winding and passes through Paraiso and Turrialba before descending out of the mountains to Siquirres, where the old highway meets the new. This route will take you around 4 hours, more or less, to get to Limón. As you enter Limón, about 500m (1,640 ft.) from the busiest section of downtown, watch for a paved road to the right, just before the railroad tracks. Take this road south to Cahuita, passing the airstrip and the beach on your left as you leave Limón. OR, there's a turnoff with signs for Sixaola and La Bomba several miles before you reach Limón. This route will join the coastal road several miles south of town.
Once you're in Cahuita...
There are only a handful of dirt streets in Cahuita. The highway runs parallel to the coast, with three main roads running perpendicular. The northernmost of these bypasses town and brings you to the northern end of Playa Negra. It's marked with signs for the Magellan Inn and other hotels up on this end. The second road in brings you to the southern end of Playa Negra, a half-mile closer to town. Look for signs for Atlantida Lodge. The third road is the principal entrance into town.
