All about Cahuita

Cahuita is located at the southern end of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. 200km (124 miles) east of San José; 42km (26 miles) south of Limón and 13km (8 miles) north of Puerto Viejo.

Most people visit Cahuita for its beautiful and clean beaches. Just south of town is Cahuita National Park which encompasses not only miles of immaculate beach, but also stunning coral reefs off-shore, and vast forests inland. In town, the mostly Afro-Caribbean locals are extremely friendly and laid-back. The strong English-speaking and Caribbean influences set the town apart from any others in Costa Rica, and provide a unique cultural experience. It's Costa Rica with a Jamaican flair.

What to do in Cahuita...

Enjoy the beach! The best place for swimming outside of Cahuita National Park is Playa Negra.

Adventure trips such as glass-bottom-boat and snorkeling trips, jungle tours, white-water rafting trips, and Jeep tours to the Bribri Reservation begin right in Cahuita. Most companies also offer multiday trips to Tortuguero, as well as to Bocas del Toro, Panama. In addition you can schedule a horseback tour or rent horses and mountain bikes to explore the park or beach. We work with many local tour companies, ask us and we can book for you.

Bird-watchers and sloth lovers can visit Aviarios del Caribe (750-0775) about 5 miles north of town. Tour the sloth rehabilitation project being run here or take your choice of several canoe tour combinations and watch for the more than 300 species of birds have been sighted in the area. Be sure to make reservations in advance.
